Educational Nursing Needs of Hospitalized Cancer Patients

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was preliminarily to identify characteristics, signs & symptoms and educational needs of cancer patients. Development of the discharge teaching program for the patients with cancer in the future would be based on their symptoms experienced, amount of information, and content of information necessary for home care. Thirty six males and thirty females identified the present and future needs of information regarding their diseases by questionnaires. Subjects experienced fatigue, weakness, pain, and insomnia as main symptoms at the time of hospitalization. Types of information that subjects wanted to receive were: 1) the need of physical care directly related to their disease : 2) psychological needs; and 3) social needs. Further, 47 subjects(71%) showed the need of discharge teaching program while in the hospital.
